Pittsburgh, PA, USA, is known for its three rivers.

  • The Monongahela and Allegheny join at the Point and form the Ohio River.
  • Great teams thrived at 3RS, Three Rivers Stadium.

The region's fourth river is its network of swim pools.

  • Pittsburgh had the highest concentrations of public swim pools in the world.

Call: Lifeguard Recruitment Initiative

Lifeguards need to be good swimmers.

Many people and places to can help with swimming skills and aquatic fitness including the Saturday Swim School offered for free by Coach Mark Rauterkus at the Northside’s PPS Allegheny School located across the street from the Aviary. See: Swim.CLOH.org. Call or text: 412-298-3432.

Basic Pre-Lifeguard Abilities:

  • Swim 300 yards without stopping,
  • Tread water for 2-minutes without using your hands, (kicking vertical, head up), and
  • Recover a diving brick from the bottom of the deep end of the pool.

Lifeguard certifications come from Lifeguard Instructors who teach Lifeguard Classes from various agencies: American Red Cross, The YMCA, Ellis & Associates, Starfish International.
Training includes: Lifeguard skills (such as the rescues), CPR, First Aid,plus written and practical tests. Courses take about 20-hours. Lessons occur in person in classrooms, in the swim pool and sometimes online too.

Pittsburgh’s Citiparks, Sandcastle, and The Pittsburgh Project offer no-charge lifeguard classes for employees who work for them. Help plan with more robust activities in spring 2020.

Saturdays in the winter, we are going to hold two main sessions. One is at 8:30 am and the other starts at 11:30 am to 1 pm. Pick your time to fit your schedule. Drop in for some group instruction and a fun game of SKWIM. Adult and youth swimmers and non-swimmers with or without their guardians, siblings, children, friends and others from the community are welcome to attend this labor of love.

The location, PPS Allegheny Middle School swim pool on the Northside, across the street from the Aviary.

Scout groups, sports teams and other civic organizations are encouraged to contact us for game-time opportunities on Saturdays. If your group or club wishes to schedule a visit, don't hesitate in reaching out to Mark-at-Rauterkus-dot-com.

Varsity, Club, Y and/or Summer swim teams can do this.

Opportunities to swim and play SKWIM in and around Pittsburgh are growing. With your help and invite, we hope to see you at the pool soon.

If in doubt about a gathering, text, email or call Coach Mark, 412-298-3432, or Mark -at- Rauterkus -dot- com.

Invite Coach Mark to your practice. If available, your squad gets to have a fun intra-squad workout, with the fellow coaches either in the water and playing the game with the swimmers or else on the deck.

SKWIM was played with Oakland Catholic and Central Catholic High School swim teams at Chatham University's pool at 10 am practice on Saturday, February 9, 2019. See some of the action at SKWIM.us.
